A trade that rewards patience, and it shows in the finish

French polishing is one of the oldest timber-finishing methods there is. Thin layers of shellac, hand-applied in a slow circular motion with a cloth pad called a fad, built up over days rather than sprayed on in minutes. No shortcut gets the same depth. The finish sits in the grain rather than on top of it.

We’re a Sydney-based team of qualified polishers working across restoration and new fitouts. That runs from a single heirloom chair to hotel reception desks, RSL club bars and commercial staircases. We’re set up to work on occupied sites, we colour-match to what’s already there, and we hand over a written scope so there are no surprises.

    One trade, every fine
    surface in your space

From a single heirloom chair to a full commercial fitout, the craft stays the same and only the scale changes. Each service below is hand-applied and colour-matched to sit with the rest of your interior

    Timber Flooring

Floors sanded back to bare timber, repaired where needed and re-finished to a hard-wearing, even sheen that stands up to traffic.

Five stages, all done by hand

No spray gun involved. Every stage is applied with a cloth pad, in thin coats, until the grain sits under glass-like layers of shellac.

    Prep & Strip

Old finish removed and the surface sanded back to bare, sound timber.

    Grain Filling

Open grain filled and levelled so the surface reads smooth and flat.

    Bodying Up

Dozens of thin shellac coats built up patiently with the fad.

    Spiriting Off

A final spirit pass clears the haze and pulls the depth forward.

    Final Polish

Cured, buffed and checked against natural light before we sign off.

It's a traditional timber-finishing method using shellac dissolved in methylated spirit, applied by hand in thin layers with a cloth pad (a "fad"). Because it's built up in dozens of fine coats rather than sprayed on, it produces a deeper, warmer finish that sits in the grain. It can also be repaired in place later rather than needing a full strip-back.

It depends on the piece and its condition. French polishing is a slow craft by nature, since the coats need time to build and cure. A single item of furniture is usually a matter of days, and a commercial fitout is scoped and staged around your timeline. We give you a realistic schedule in writing with your quote, so you're not guessing.

Yes. Colour-matching is a core part of what we do. We blend the shellac and tone the work to sit with your existing timber or joinery, so a repair or an addition reads as part of the original rather than a patch. There's no guesswork, since we match on site against the actual surface.

Regularly. Much of our commercial work, in bank branches, clubs, hotels and offices, is done while the space is still in use. We stage the work, keep the area clean and contained, and plan around your trading or operating hours so there's minimal disruption.

Yes. We're fully licensed and insured, and happy to provide documentation for commercial sites and building managers on request.
